IHRICON is a leading organization working in the areas of Peace and Non-Violence. To support journalists in their pursuit for Peace oriented media coverage IHRICON has created the Forum for Peace Journalism for all those journalists who wish to apply their knowledge, experience and abilities in the areas of Peace and Gender perspectives.

IHRICON has trained many journalists from all over the country. It has provided Peace and gender awareness training to 75 working journalists who came from a wide cross section of communities across the country. The Peace and gender awareness in Journalism training was conducted by IHRICON in 2007.   The objective of the program was to increase the coverage of the subjects of peace and gender issues in the Media.

Three 4-day residential training events were delivered to the journalists in Biratnanagar, Butwal & Nepalgunj.  The purpose of the programme was twofold:

  • To increase awareness of the topics and to increase coverage of them in articles published by the journalists
  • To feedback to the journalists about their current coverage of the topics involved in the training event.

Comments and suggestions were offered to the journalists about their current work at the end of the training. Additional activities took part within the training events:

  • The Collection of articles and news feature that were published in different newspapers,
  • The provision of Digital Cameras and Tape Recorders to the journalist who have raised the issues on Peace and Gender. These items would enable them to be better prepared in future to cover the topics in a more professional way.

The program helped to raise awareness on “Peace and Gender” issues, and it encouraged the journalists to increase the number times they write on the issues.
